Queen of hills

This is a district of West Bengal in India. It comprise of four subdivisions namely Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong and Siliguri. Siliguri is in the foothills and the rest are all hill based. It was the summer resort when the capital of India was in Calcutta during the British rule. The best time to visit is from March to May and September to November. In winter there is a drastic fall in temperature from the summer's 15° C to 25° C to 2° C to 10° C in winter. November to May is also a good season to visit Darjeeling. Monsoon is severe. The road network in this region is supported by national highway number 31, national highway number 31 A, Siliguri - Mirik - Ghoom, Sevoke - Teesta bridge – Kalimpong, Teesta Bazaar to Darjeeling , Sukhna - Pankhabari - Kurseong, Siliguri - Darjeeling is national highway number 55.

Darjeeling town

Situated at an elevation of 2134 meters with a backdrop of the mighty snow clad Himalayan Peaks makes Darjeeling a hotspot for tourist. The world's highest peak Everest can be seen from the town. It is also known for its orthodox tea and the vegetation is topped with sublime landscapes of snowy heights of the renowned Everest, Kanchenjunga and the mountains of east Nepal, Sikkim and Tibet. Darjeeling is also known for Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s famous expedition to Mount Everest. It is also internationally known for the Himalayan Heritage Railway.

How to reach

By Air – Bagdogra airport is well connected by airways to some of the major cities of India and is only 100 kilometers from Darjeeling. Several airlines like Jet, Indian, Deccan airways and Spice airlines fly in and out of Bagdogra airport. The Bagdogra airport at Siliguri is the main airport and is situated in the outskirts of Siliguri. Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and Chennai flights are available on daily basis. Helicopter services are also available for Sikkim.
By Rail – The major railway station is New Jalpaiguri railway station near Siliguri is connected with several super fast trains from Kolkata, the north east and other parts of the country. Himalayan Heritage Train passes through forest up the hill crisscrossing the motor road and passing through bazaars is itself an experience and is in operation from 1878 and generally takes 8 hours from New Jalpaiguri station to Darjeeling. From New Jalpaiguri regular trains are available from Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum, Patna etc.
By Road – Darjeeling is 100 kilometers via Mirik and 90 kilometers via Kurseong from Siliguri. West Bengal State Transport Corporation operates a large network of buses around the region of Darjeeling. There are many private agencies running their own transport system. Private vehicles are also available. The roads are generally good and bus services and hired cars regularly ply between Siliguri and these destinations.
